Since I'm relatively new to Usenet, I thought it would be helpful to start a thread about filtering. So what kinds of filters do you veterans use? Right now I'm simply filtering out uppercase subjects and those that contain more than two exclamation marks in a row. I'd like to figure out a way to filter subject lengths that are more than 100 columns in width, too... haven't quite nailed that one yet.

So what do you guys use? List 'em here to we can all improve our signal-to-noise ratio while browsing. Smile

I don't use filtering at all. We don't get a whole lot of spam or trolling in the anime groups in general, and I find that a lot of the time filtering accidentally blocks out legitimate posting. My two cents, anyway.

I've never used filters or killfiles. The newsgroups I read are very low on spam, and I generally find idiots entertaining, so I have no need to filter.

The only special measure I take is to avoid posting my main email address to newsgroups, to avoid having it buried under spam. I use throwaway email addresses when posting to Usenet - they're real addresses, but I only check them for genuine mail every couple of weeks.

Like others, I used to use filters but discovered that it's hard to make a filter that doesn't at least occasionally drop stuff I wouldn't want to miss. So I don't use them at all anymore. I find if you are using a news client with an efficient enough interface, you rarely need filters, at least in low-crap-ratio NGs like ours.

Filtering isn't really needed for the anime groups... but for heavy binary groups, you might want to filter out anything that's less than 10KB, subject does not contain ?AR|R??|ACE|A??|ZIP|NFO|SFV, marked read, and is older than three days. Sort the group by post subject, and set auto-purge to six days. Yes this will kill all discussion threads but for certain binary groups, it's very effective in sorting through the gigs of stuff posted everyday.
