I've been using Octanews for about three weeks now and I love it.
The seven day retention is good enough for me and completion is even better than Easynews which I no longer use.
However, after downloading two DVDs I had clearly made a mistake by getting a 15GB block account.
I just signed up for the 128KBps speed-capped account which has unlimited downloads/uploads.
It's $9.99 U.S./month or $55.55 U.S. for six months. I bought the six month plan.
Judging from the amount of posting I do in ABSJ, propagation seems excellent as well.
I highly recommend Octanews to anyone looking for a premium NSP. Especially to anyone who's ISP news-server(like mine) is useless for binaries. |

According to their privacy policy they log all posts with msg-id (and keep them for 30 days).
Not too many other commercial servers do this (or at least not according to their policies...) Wonder why Octanews chooses to do that.
Anyway I thought I'd mention it, since that sort of thing is fairly important to me. |

Keeping them for 30 days to help track abuse of their servers sounds pretty reasonable to me.
I would probably do the same.
Another thing I should've mentioned is using XPAT. Using XPAT with Easynews was extremely slooooooow so I hardly ever used it. Using it with Octanews is very fast. XPAT is actually useful to me now. |

I think you have your explanation right there .
I wish XPAT on Easynews was more available - as it is, I always get "XPAT is disabled for this group" and it seems to apply to the entire alt.binaries hierarchy. Sucking down 30 days of headers (or whatever it is nowadays) for alt.binaries.multimedia is the suck.
They've been doing some cool things with their web interface though. I never saw announcements for these things but the global search ROCKS. Their "par viewer" is also very cool, and not for the intended purpose. It makes selection of files for downloading a lot easier.
They've also started doing 1 a week surveys and if you fill it out (like 5-7 rating questions), you get 500MB credit. Do it every week, thats 2 GB extra a month!
Sorry, this was supposed to be about Octanews wasn't it
