What the heck does "sbc" mean in the subject of a divx post? It's not a fansub group, is it?

Naw, not a fansub group. An encoding method - "Smart Bitrate Control".

I could be mistaken on this, but I believe SBC means a bit more than just VBR. In the case of SBC it also means switching between the two DivX 3 codecs (high motion and low motion) according to the "situation", as well as adjusting the bit rate.

Well, in it's very first incarnations, switching between fastmo and lowmo 3.11 was the main thing but after more was known about the codec, it was recommended to use lowmo for the whole thing and forget about switching. It's more about playing around with the other dozen paramters now... like min bitrate, max bitrate, compression of the bitrate curve, etc.
