Out of curiosity, I generated some plots of posting volume (number of posts, not size/bandwidth!) in the big 3 groups, as recorded on animeusenet. They are available at http://abma.x-maru.org/~xo/plots.html. We have been doing this for a year now.
Note that the data plotted here is only roughly correlated with size/bandwidth. For example, high volume days according to this data tends to be due to large number of small posts (ie Andy Combs recent posting of various fansub openings - note the large uptick in aba/abma this month).
Notable trend: sometime around mid-summer, there was a increase in the number of posts to all 3 groups. Until that time, the numbers had been fairly flat.
Notice also the big dip in abmar ca. late September/early October. I can't help but think of Usenet September effect, but it's in reverse and is not seen in the other two groups. I'm not sure what to make of it.
Anyway, I thought that since I'd spent some time generating plots, I'd share.

Nifty-- makes me wish you had more than just one year's worth of these graphs so that we could see if this pattern is a 'typical' annual trend!
Interesting, though, that the posting volume appears (roughly) to have doubled in the last year... That's a substantial increase. |

I'm sure it will continue to increase too.
It should be fairly easy to automate the generation of plots like this from the animeusenet database - just run a date query, count the number of lines returned, and feed the results to gnuplot.
I think we should keep these graphs around for each year, and maybe for each month as well, just to see what happens.
Good work, xo! |

Love this kind of stuff, xo.
One thought on the abmar dip -- it gets significant reposts from the sailormoon/dragonball groups also. I'd expect that they have a younger, pre-college, demographic -- folks who have extra time in the summer to devote to posting, and who are also not subject to the *whoa, got to use that University broadband* syndrome that we see in September. These pre-college types may also be the ones who do a lot of the reposting/filling in abmar anyway, as they might not have as much access to new material, but still want to participate.
