This one has been going on for a while - someone explain the rationale behind putting what appears to be checksums in the file name and/or subject line. I don't understand.

This is my guess as to why people are doing this.

So that when you dl the file you have the crc and don't have to get an sfv too. Its mostly for IRC distro, as you get the sfv file you would have to get in another queue...

I for one like the trend, as I don't need to store a seperate sfv file to keep the checksum info around, and I wouldn't have thought of this on my own =). I'm actually planning on writting a perl script or something to sfv check files named this way "eventually".

It doesn't matter to me that the CRC is in the filename because I rename everything after unpacking anyway, but I do like having something like that in the subject line because it makes it much easier to locate a specific post on EasyNews' web interface.

Ahh, irc sourcing - good explanation! Makes more sense now.

I also like G's tip - anything to make easynews's searches better (wish they'd improve that thing Confused)

Another thing of note about crcs is that WinRAR3 includes a crc32 column now.. just open up the rar and it's off to the left... Doubt it actually is among the reasoning for including crcs in filenames as stated above, but a little 'feature' of note, I guess...

...Don't worry, soon enough newbies will start requesting files in the subject line of a binary post, and they'll make sure to include the CRC info of the file they're requesting.
