Use this thread to make suggestions to the NAGs (see http://abma.x-maru.org/nag/ for details).

Might as well put this here... My own suggestion for a new *nag*

(Also posted 'as is' in abmad)

The first trial iteration of a possible future *nag* concerning
streamed files w/PAR2 has been posted in abma under:
"Re: [aone] ROD TV - 11 - "[AonE]_Rod_TV_11 -=- Morse, please read..."

...and copied below. Comments/criticisms welcome.....

>------------------------

Granted, while there are many attractive reasons for implementing
streamed episode posts with PAR2 recovery, there are several reasons
why this may not be appropriate in aba/abma/abmar:

-- Many news-readers have problems grabbing any segments past the
first missing one, hence it's easy for the user to not have enough
PAR2 blocks to affect repair, especially when large files, such as
those common to the anime groups, are being posted.

-- You've eliminated the CRC check inherent in RAR, and users may
neglect to run PAR2 against their download, increasing the chances of
propagating bit-damaged files through the groups

-- You've eliminated the secondary protection of RAR's recovery record
(whose use is always recommended), which is particularly useful for
repairing small bit damage, especially on those occasions when the
PAR2 utility itself seems to actually create such problems (perhaps
due to memory problems on the sending or receiving machines).

-- You've removed the ability for third parties (or the poster
themselves) to do traditional *Fills*, leaving a full repost as the
only option for helping someone who has had large incompletion
problems on their local server for the original post

And there are other issues that a noob trying this method might not be
aware of:

-- The poster needs to be using the right software to make the upload,
one which gives an aborted post the ability to resume after failure
without having to restart the whole thing, resulting in huge wastes of
BW. Obviously some news-readers/posters would handle this much more
gracefully then others. Questions they need to be aware of: Can you
halt & resume post? Can you repost specific segments? If the box
crashes, is a total restart the only option?

(....an example might be your Godannar 4 post, which aborted, leaving
35M of currently wasted server space....)

-- Though most posts are rar'd without compression -- ""Stored""
..or should be, there are still formats that benefit from compression
-- mpegs primarily.

-- The PAR2 block size should be an integer multiple of the post's
segment size to maximize the efficency of PAR2, both in repair time
and download BW requirements.

I have 2 little suggestions for the nags:

1) New nag: Put the title of the anime first, with no unnecessary punctuation and information before the title.

Good example: Mai Hime Ep01 [GroupName] [Codecs] (Count) (Misc info) - filename.ext
Bad examples: NEW!! Mai Hime Ep01 [GroupName] [Codecs] (Count) - filename.ext
\(^O^)/ *~*~* ==Mai Hime== Ep01 [GroupName] [Codecs] (Count) - filename.ext

Reason: It's a lot easier trying to find something specific within 10-100 thousands of headers. It also helps reduce the length of the subject line.

2) For nag #10, instead of writing "HIWIH" in the subject line of the nag (when it's posted to the groups), write it out, "Here-is-what-I-have".

Reason: I don't think people who do HIWIH posts know that they are doing a HIWIH post or why they shouldn't do it; even if they do, they probably don't realize that HIWIH stands for here-is-what-I-have.

Agree about having the name first, but note that I usually use an abbreviation (a semi-obvious one I hope) myself. As for *nagging* about odd chars at the start, that might be too hard to get folks to react to -- too much micro-managing -- at some level I'd like the nags not to be too annoying, though they inherently are. Perhaps I'll add a note about wierd beginning chars in the *Don't make the SL too long* nag. Incidently, I get around finding all posts of a series (now matter how hard the poster tries to hide them) with the filtered viewing that Newsbin allows.

As for HIWIH, I've already had complaints about the length of the nag subject lines (showing that folks will complain about anything, I guess). If someone does a HIWIH post, and I see it, they'll usually get some *personalized* advice. But next time I post it, I'll try to remember to convert to the long form.
