Never been. Can't really imagine ever going. Unless I got a job in the biz or something.

Are they interesting?

I've only been to a couple of small, local ones. Not the big, crowded ones. Even so, they're a good place to find stuff to buy, like wall scrolls, lamis, figurines etc.

And the screening rooms can be fun if you're comfortable watching anime with a bunch of strange otaku.

Never been to one. Would probably be interesting if it was a big one with lots of interesting stuff going on but I hate crowds so maybe not.

S'funny... There's one coming up in Tampa/St.Pete, FL according to some spam in the groups I think I saw. Hour and a half drive... Nah I'm too lazy, and I need the $ for computer hardware right now. Wink

The screenings sound interesting. Are they usually subbed? I suppose it depends on the particular market the convention is catering to.

Are the otakus scary? Being in a room full of people WAY too into it might be a distracting environment to try to enjoy a show. I have images of Rocky Horror-like behavior with an anime twist. Whatever that means.

As for the rest of the walk-around-and-fake-being-interested-in-stuff-so-you-can-get-freebies aspect - maybe I go to the wrong kind of shows, but I just never got into it. Even E3 was kind of like that, so I stopped going.

I like the auto show, though.

Yeah, they're usually either hard-to-find stuff or fresh fansubs, sometimes really bad fansubs that are funny just for the translations. I watched several episodes of Slayers Try for the first time at a con, and sometimes it was hard to tell if people were laughing because the show was funny or because the subs were funny. Smile

Well, I don't understand the RHPS phenomenon. It is kind of weird but you get used to it after a couple of episodes. There will be seemingly normal people, crumb-covered fat guys, little kids, the occasional cosplayer and the MC who controls the show will often be somewhat clownish in behavior. There will always be at least one obnoxious person in the crowd. I'd treat it as a chance to preview something you haven't seen before. It's better with friends.

Freebies?? Do you see dead people too? Very Happy
No, everybody knows that otaku are cash-packed suckers who will overspend on impulse if you show them something not found locally. The prices tend to be higher than what you can find on the Internet. I must admit I've fallen for it myself at least once.

Another fun thing I found at a con was a modeling workshop. I got to watch a cute local girl make statues of DBZ characters out of Sculpy. She was really good at it, and she had photos of other models she had done of Ranma etc. It was inspirational.

Hmm, I guess I automatically assumed screenings were put on by publishers of newly licensed materials, as marketing to drive up interest. It sounds from your description that this isn't necessarily the case. Fansubs? These screenings aren't sanctioned by copyright/license holders then? Do they just look the other way, feeling that it helps the industry more than it hurts?

Heh, again, I guess I assumed that the conventions were more like the other trade shows (mostly game or computer oriented) that I've been too, where displays were for marketing so you could always count on coming back with a bag full o' swag.

I'm actually kind of curious now.

Well, I've only been to small shows organized by local anime clubs, local vendors and local fans. They weren't big enough to attract publishers or toy manufacturers. I guess the really big conventions would be quite different in that respect.

The ones I've been to are typically held in a community hall or a hotel convention centre and have a few workshops, a few screening rooms, a small stage for cosplays and speakers, and a sales area for a few dozen local stores and artists. We're not talking thousands of people here.

Never been myself, but younger family members have been taking the hike up to AX the last few years, so I get a full review. The younger one in fact cosplayed Kid (from ChronoCross) there last year and also at the local event here in town, an ....errr... *affair* called Comic-con International (unrepentant plug -- the biggest *mother* of them all -- and it's next week http://www.comic-con.org/ ). Though it's covering all the graphic genres and beyond (how else would you explain Halle Berry's and Angelina Jolie's presence -- well, not that it needs any explanation... Wink ), it has a large anime contingent. Here's a list of the showings (just listing because there are some interesting choices):

That's allot of anime. Methinks my head would explode, or, at the very least, my hair would turn green and spiky. Interesting what gets grouped with what in each room.

I do to, for some reason. It's the one type of show/con that I go to when I can. I'm not even that much into cars anymore, probably more due to realistic budget expectations than anything. But I find them rather fun to go to just to see the neat stuff I can't afford. Also, classic car shows are so very neat. Although they are, of course, usually smaller and outdoors in the infernal Miami heat. Confused

Back on topic, I've never gone to an anime con (or any con for that matter). I'd consider going with friends just to see one, but I dont really have any local friends that are into anime, anymore.

Holy Mackeral!!! That's a lot of f'n anime to watch inc. I wonder how big and crowded the rooms showing popular stuff are? I also wonder if it's 'good deal' or 'gouge' on things like DVDs etc?

My eye's would be bugging out after watching so much in such a short time. Shocked

<OT> Keikai ever goto the boat show down there? It's the 'Mother of all boat shows' and there's some cool stuff to see if you're into boats. If I remember correctly the big one's in Feb usually (the winter one's the big sucker). Last time I actually went (ages ago), it had gotten so big it filled the convention center, spilled outside, and also took up a marina in the Grove and one on the Miami Beach. I've even been an exhibitor there back in the mid 80's when I built boats down there in Miami for a short spell (small shallow draft sailboats). God you know it's sad but I think I still have my exhibitor tag somewhere. Embarassed </OT>

(...giving up being so cryptic about personal stuff...)

My Wife chauffeured Daughter #3 and 2 friends up to Orange County for AX last Saturday. She usually goes with Daughter #1 (the original root of anime interest in the household and why "inc" is here at all Razz ), but she's been studing in Japan since January. D#3 was really pleased to see how *big* WHR was being treated. She didn't cosplay this year (she's the one that did Kid last year), but at one point had seriously considered going as Robin (D#3 is 15, thin, looks a bit like Robin and can kind of get this intense *focused* look in her eyes that, well, you're not sure fire _wouldn't_ result Rolling Eyes ). Of the newer stuff, Last Exile was getting a lot of attention -- for one, it was on the program cover.

Hehe... Awesome! Wish I got to go to things like that when I was a kid. Then again when I was a kid there was NO anime (least not here in the states that I ever heard of). Hell, Astro Boy (the earliest I know of not being a real die hard otaku) dates to 66(?) which means I'm older than anime!? Crying or Very sad

Much better that than say, being able to give you the impression of a certain pair of fire obsessed MTV characters. Twisted Evil

A cousin of mine lived in Tokyo for some time a long ways back working for Citygroup I think. A wee bit expencive for my budget even to visit. Wink

P.S. Tell daughter #1 thanks. Where would we be without 'oldtimers' like ya'll trying to keep the groups sane. Smile

I went to Anime Weekend Atlanta last year. It was pretty cool, a lot of strange cos players running around =). One of the best parts of conventions are the dealer rooms. All kinds of import stuff for sale at half decent prices, though make sure you look around for the best one, as you can usually find most stuff at atleast two places. The presentations done by companies are cool, and most of them give away copies of their upcoming dvd releases, though I didn't win any =(. The video rooms usually show a mix of fansubs and liscensed stuff I think, though I didn't go watch anything except the advance showing of the Macross DVD ep 1 that was going on. Too busy going around the dealer room and to presentations, and I had already seen or downloaded most of what was on anyway =) =).

I'm going to be going to Otakon next month now that I live up near Baltimore. Hopefully it will be good =).

Speaking of cosplay, is it me or do cosplayers seem to pick the obscurest of anime to get costumes from? I never recognize the costumes as being from anything I've watched or was even passingly familiar to.

Perhaps my tastes and those of cosplayers are inherently orthogonal. Maybe if I watched those same anime, I'd be cosplaying too.

You never know! It could be viral or something.

<OT> Keikai ever goto the boat show down there?
Oh yeah...well at least when I was little. Back many many years ago I'd go every year with my parents. They actually bought a boat at one which he had for years (great fun!). But yeah, that was one HECK of a boat show. I remember it spilling out of the convention center, too. It's really quite huge, from what I can tell from the Herald, but I haven't been to it in ages.
