I'm new at these binary newsgroup stuff, so forgive me if i ask a stupid question ^^.

I'm using Xnews to view the various binary threads in abma/aba. What I understand (pls correct me if i'm wrong) is that a large file is generally broken into volumes (e.g. part01.rar part02.rar etc) and then is further divided into segments. Why is it that for me 98% of the volumes displayed are incomplete (i.e. there are missing parts/segments). I'll see [2/22] or [30/50] lines, but never one with all segments available Crying or Very sad .

Something tells me that this isn't normal...could someone pls enlighten me Sad .

The short answer is in the FAQ:
http://abma.x-maru.org/faq/annotated/newsservers.php

What news service are you using? I assume it is provided by your ISP. If you don't know if they use an external news service, what ISP is it? Perhaps someone will know if it's a poor one for news. (When ISPs run their own servers, these days, they are usually sub-standard.)

When all segments are available, XNews will show the full archive parts (part01, etc.) and those are the files you will "save" to your hard drive and then decompress (with a RAR utility, in that case).

Ah. Thank you. Boo.
I'm using Sympatico High Speed, so i'm not terribly surprised at the service, they've been stingy in the past (only recently lifting their bandwidth limits). But i'm still under contract. bah. Well, thanks again, it seems ill be returning to bittorrent and irc.

Well most people's news service through their ISP is either bad or really restricted, so many folks subscribe to premium news services (several of which are mentioned in that same section of the FAQ). I use Newscene and Newsguy, although Easynews is probably the most popular for folks who dont need too much data/month.

Otherwise, it's possible to find (free) public servers (someone put an annotation on that same FAQ page for a search engine for them), but I find them not worth the trouble.
