Me, I'm about 50/50 nowadays newsgroups/torrent. I expect that to change quite dramatically in about 11 days.

What's your ratio nowadays?

<cricket noises>

I'm 99% newsgroups, the remainder being fills downloaded from EasyNews via HTTP. I've never been much of a fan of P2P, and I can't be now that Rogers is trampling P2P traffic. BitTorrent as I understand it is just another P2P system, and I've always hated IRC because it's live and it tends to attract idiots even more than Usenet, if such a thing is possible.

I use NewsBin Pro but there are several things that still take me ages so would like a few tips - any more users here?

I don't think of BT in the same way I do of Kazaa and the like. It's definitely different than that. Rather than "hey can I get that file from you", it's more like "hey, lets all get together and distribute this file amongst ourselves". With anime fansubs, I typically get better speeds downloading via BT than I do from my local news server.

Another thing I like about BT is that I can "contribute" without going through the hassles of posting to the newsgroups.

Anyway, 3 more days for me!

I've never tried BT as I want to keep clear of viruses and spyware and worse (I want the contents of my hard drives to remain my private property) - how safe do you rate it?

I use the official BitTorrent, which is just some python scripts, on Linux, so viruses and spyware aren't a concern.

I can't speak for the Windows clients.

Speaking of which, I'm starting to see a lot of "this torrent only works with BitComet" and stuff like that. WTF?

Then you have certain fansub groups *cough*static-subs*cough* that reject my client because it's 1 version "out of date".

Probably 60% BT (mainly using Azureus), the rest with Newsbin Pro from my local RR and Easynews.
