I'm sure many of you have already seen this, but I found it kind of curious:

Subject: March 8 -- yEnc files and reduced retention (~50days)
Date: Sat, 09 Mar 2002 00:41:17 GMT

March 8 --

We are slowing introducing yEnc binary files to the web
site. For the next few days, they will be a few hours to
a full day behind. However, we expect them to roll in to
the web site on time starting in a few days.

As decoding yEnc binaries will add to the total number
of files that are placed onto the web site each day.. we
had to scale back some retention to make room for the
new binary files. We went from 54 to 50 days.

Thanks for the understanding and support.

The part about reduced retention makes me scratch my head a little. The only way I can think of this making sense is that retention had grown to 54 days to begin with because they were dumping yEnc stuff. Now that they are adding these back, it's shifting back towards 50.

Anyone else heard differently or have a better explanation?

I think this sounds right, Easynews probably hadn't factored in yEnc binaries when they calculated the original 54 days of retention. I don't believe they're retroactively decoding binaries that were already in the spool before they added yEnc support.
