Webhosts and co-lo hosts can be bastards to deal with-- I've been with a few over the years, and my current one (Bluedomino) has been quite good with the exception of some recent issues, such as this one a couple months ago:
Me: "My site's down and my email is rejecting all incoming messages saying 'no such user'. What gives?"
Tech: "We are aware of the problem and it should be fixed in the next hour or so. We were upgrading your server for better performance."
"OK."
...Several hours later...
"My email's still rejecting all incoming email saying my email address doesn't exist, and I am pissed about it. How long will it take to fix, and what happened?"
"Sorry about the problems. We have our entire team here working on the problem. It's a priority issue for us, we'll get things working again very soon. The problem happened while we were installing a software upgrade."
...Early the following morning....
"So, my email's still rejecting incoming mail, my site's still down. What's up?"
"It'll be up within the hour, guaranteed. We had to install an emergency security update and it corrupted some of our servers. We've nearly restored the servers, most are already fixed, and a handful are still restoring their data."
...And so, a few minutes later, my site was online again. I'm hosted by Bluedomino.com. I've been with them for almost two years, after my last webhost has problem after problem after problem. Bluedomino "guarantees 99.999% uptime", but doesn't always achieve it. Overall I'm happy with their service, with the exception of a small handful of issues that've cropped up late this summer and early this fall after they made a substantial upgrade to their servers. The thing that's kept me with them is their "LiveChat" tech support. It kicks ass not having to wait for their support technicians to email you back.
Xo, good luck with your host! |
